A Nebraska nonprofit brought in over 300 bicyclists from around the world pedaling across the state, for a good cause.

Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN) kicked off its 41st year doing the bicycle tour. The riders began in Benkelman on Sunday and plan to finish a seven-day trek across the state ending at Ashland.

The trek brings riders from all over the state, like Omaha native Elana Elder who has been riding alongside her family since she was seven years old.

“The longest we’re doing this year is 80 miles, but in past years sometimes it’s been 100 miles," said Elder.

Although the ride may be long, Elana said she likes to think of the journey in a specific way.

“In 10-mile segments so every 10-12 miles we have a sag stop," said Elder.

Monday’s stop was at the city of Alma’s park, where over 100 tents filled with cyclists planning to rest before getting back on their trek.

Father and son Dan and Magnus Benz tell me their journey began in Missouri.

They prepped for a ride that far.

“We’d do a 22-mile ride south to another town and then ride back so it would be a round trip 44 miles, two days and we’d do that about every week for about a month or two," said Magnus.

The over 400 total miles pedaled by the cyclists are a part of BRAN's scholarship efforts for Nebraska high school students in rural areas.

"A lot of these smaller towns and communities you’re talking about a lot of kids who grew up in the farming community, and unless they had wealthy parents, they may not have had the same education opportunities as others so we’re hoping to keep and educate kids that haven’t left the state by keeping and educating them here and hopefully they'll be the future for healthcare," said Doug Scherlie, President & CEO of BRAN, Inc.

He said the scholarship amount varies from $1,500 to $3,000 that is given to every overnight town in their trek.
