23RD. A NEBRASKA HOSPITAL IS TYING TOGETHER TREES OF HOPE WITH ASPIRATIONS OF LOOPING IN FINANCIAL SUPPORT. IT’S AN EFFORT TO GIVE CANCER FIGHTERS A BETTER CHANCE AT BECOMING SURVIVORS. NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S BILL SHARMAN HAS THE STORY AT BRYAN HEALTH IN LINCOLN. SANDY LARSON SHOULDN’T BE HERE. I WAS HAVING BALANCE ISSUES THAT JUST WASN’T RIGHT. I JUST HAD SHARPSHOOTING PAIN THAT WOULD STOP RIGHT AT THE MIDLINE. IN THE FALL OF 2021, DOCTORS AT BRYAN HEALTH FOUND A LIME SIZED CANCEROUS TUMOR IN HER BRAIN. GOSH, WITHIN A COUPLE OF WEEKS WE WERE SCHEDULED AND HE WAS DOING THE SURGERY AND AND REMOVED THE TUMOR. BUT THE PROGNOSIS WAS BLEAK. SHE WAS GIVEN LESS THAN A YEAR TO LIVE. BUT BY THE GRACE OF GOD, WE’VE MADE IT THIS LONG. IT’S BEEN A YEAR AND A HALF OR SO. SO WE’RE GONE FOR FOUR MORE. YEAH, SHE REMAINS CANCER FREE. AND HER NAME IS ONE OF 50 WRITTEN ON RIBBONS. SO THAT PEOPLE CAN SEE HOW MANY SURVIVORS WE HAVE AND TO REALLY JUST HONOR AND CELEBRATE ALL THAT THEY’VE GONE THROUGH. THE RIBBONS ARE ALSO A WAY TO FUNDRAISE, THEN TIED TO TREES OF HOPE AT BOTH OF BRYAN HEALTH’S LINCOLN CAMPUSES. WE’RE REALLY FORTUNATE THAT 100% OF THOSE TRIBUTE GIFTS THAT WERE MADE THIS YEAR ARE GOING TO SUPPORT THE CURRENT CANCER PATIENTS WHO ARE GOING THROUGH TREATMENT. IT ALSO COINCIDES WITH NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVOR’S DAY, WHICH IS THIS SUNDAY. BUT LIFE IS GOOD. IT’S GOOD TO BE HERE. IT’S GOOD TO BE A PART OF THIS NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVOR EVENT. Bryan Health is tying ribbons around its Tree of Hope to honor cancer survivors and give others hope.

Outside the east and west campuses of Bryan Health in Lincoln, you'll find a rainbow of ribbons dangling from a single tree. Each one with a name; names like Sandi Larson."I would walk and have balance issues — it just wasn't right," Larson said. In the fall of 2021, Larson was diagnosed with a malignant lime-sized tumor in her brain. "Within a couple weeks, we were scheduled and going into surgery to remove the tumor," she said. The surgery was successful in removing the tumor but the prognosis was bleak. She was given three to 12 months to live. That was 18 months ago. "By the grace of God, we've made it this long," Larson said. "It's been a year and a half and we're going for more."That's why on Friday, she was tying one of the 50-plus ribbons on a tree outside Bryan Health. The Tree of Hope is meant to do just that — give others hope. "So people can see how many survivors we have and honor and celebrate all that they've gone through," said Bryan Health's director of philanthropy, Valerie Hunt. The ribbons are also a way to fundraise. According to the hospital, cancer survivors, or loved ones of a cancer survivor, are able to purchase a ribbon to be placed on a survivor tree. Ribbons will feature the survivor’s name and be part of a colorful display outside each hospital entrance through June 12. "We're fortunate that 100% of tribute gifts made this year are made to support current cancer patients going through treatments," Hunt said. As for Larson, she's enjoying the cancer-free life she wasn't sure she'd have today. "Life is good," she said. "It's good to be here.
