Weapon offenses recently rose in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Friday is National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Everyone is encouraged to honor the hundreds of people killed or wounded every single day.

According to the Lincoln Police Department’s Crime Analysis & Intelligence Unit, weapon offenses recently peaked in several categories.

According to the latest data, 81 felons were caught with a weapon in 2021.

The closest year was 2017, when police busted 63 felons.

Illegal weapon seizures also reached a new high in 2021, compared with the prior five years.

There were 93 shootings and shots-fired incidents in 2021 as well.

That number’s way up from 2017, when there were 68, but down from 2020, when 100 were recorded.
