Long Beach denied by Garden City
For the second straight year Long Beach found itself a goal short of topping Garden City on the county championship stage. A late goal by Garden City’s Kendal Morris with 2:41 left in the second half proved the difference in a 9-8 win in the Nassau Class B girls’ lacrosse final at Adelphi’s Motamed Field June 1.
Cal Gober: A Role Model of Leadership and Dedication in Nassau County Lacrosse
Cal Gober, a senior midfielder at Paul D. Schreiber High School in the Port Washington School District, has been awarded the James C. Metzger Leadership Award. The annual award recognizes outstanding leadership qualities displayed by high school lacrosse players in Nassau County. Recipients of the award exemplify values such as honesty, tenacity, and commitment on and off the field. Cal Gober was selected as the outstanding player from one of eight teams that competed in the finals of the 2023 Section VIII Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse championships. Cal's unwavering dedication to lacrosse and his community, along with his remarkable work ethic, have made him a role model for aspiring young lacrosse players. Cal’s ability to inspire and uplift others, both on and off the field, makes him a deserving recipient of the James C. Metzger Leadership Award.
‘He never slowed down,’ friends say of Jay Fagin at bench dedication
Dozens of local tennis players gathered on May 21 in Oceanside Park to remember their friend Jay Fagin, from Long Beach. Fagin died on Jan. 18, 2022, just shy of his 87th birthday, and was known by many in the community, always seen around town wearing a cowboy hat and humming a tune.

Caught one pass for 22 yards. 2022 projections: Villari could benefit from Oronde Gadsden’s move back to WR as he could see more snaps at the tight end position in passing sets. Syracuse’s coaches seem to love his athleticism so we’ll see if Jason Beck has some plans to use him this fall.
Seaford wins L.I. softball championship
In the bottom of the ninth inning of a scoreless Long Island Class B softball championship game on the first evening of June, Seaford was threatening after a walk to Gabby Bellamore and some nifty small ball by Jamie Young and Katie Young, who both laid down stellar bunts that gave Center Moriches trouble.
