Jeff Herron, Lexington's homeless prevention manager, says the $2.1 million in federal housing grants the city and its partners were awarded will help people looking for a place to live, or trying to keep one.

The City of Lexington will receive more than 2-point-1 million dollars in federal grant funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Jeff Herron, Lexington’s homeless prevention manager, said the money is one of the city’s primary sources of funding for homeless programs.

“That Continuum of Care program supports us operating housing and supportive services for individuals that are experiencing literal homelessness. Within that were able to provide a couple of different levels of assistance.”

Herron said the city and its partners prepared and submitted hundreds of pages of documents for the competitive grant, knowing that, quite literally, lives are at stake.

“Within that were able to provide a couple of different levels of assistance that would meet the needs of individuals based on what kind of term of rental assistance that they need, and what kind of intensity of supportive services are needed to help them to stabilize and maintain housing.”

According to a news release from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, 31-point-3 million dollars was awarded for homeless-related programs across Kentucky.
