Lewes farmers market to host Crooked Hammock chef June 2
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, June 2, at George H.P. Smith Park on the corner of Dupont and Johnson avenues, Lewes.
If it rains, the market moves to the Lewes Elementary School parking lot at 820 Savannah Road.
At 10 a.m., Chef Ted Deptula, culinary director of Crooked Hammock Brewery, will prepare an early summer meal of grilled asparagus with deviled egg and sweet pea risotto. Using fresh strawberries from the market, he will also make his delicious strawberry lemonade.
Children’s storytime at the market, a partnership with the Lewes Public Library, starts at 10 a.m. under the yellow tent. Library volunteers will read books about farming, gardening and healthy eating. All children and their adults are welcome.
The HLFM Big Raffle returns with three prizes: a $1,400 gift certificate to Seagreen Bicycle; the Fabu-Lewes-Feast including 12 $100 restaurant gift cards; and a private, in-home, three-course dinner with wine pairing for 10 by Chef Sean Corea. Tickets are on sale at the market, and the drawing is set for Saturday, Sept. 2.
The market’s 33 vendors will be bringing snap peas, strawberries, spinach, arugula, fresh-cut asparagus, spinach, lettuces, kale, Swiss chard, radishes, turnips, stir-fry mixes, tilapia fish, oysters, live crabs, hand-picked crabmeat, grass-fed chicken, beef, lamb, pork, honey, jams, mushrooms, fresh-laid eggs, A-2 milk, yogurt, butter, kombucha, cold-pressed juices, fresh-baked breads, pastries made with fruit from market vendors, herb and flower plants, cut-flower bouquets and more. The market processes payments from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, and Women, Infants and Children Program benefits, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Customers may go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.
The HLFM continues its food pantry purchase program. Market customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk and other food from growers at the market to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to various food pantries including Epworth United Methodist Church and Casa San Francisco. The market team thanks customers for their generosity.
Dogs at the markets must be under control on a six-foot, non-retractable leash.
The circle in front of the Fred Thomas Building at the foot of Dupont Avenue will be open for handicap drop-off and pickup. Beebe Healthcare is generously allowing market customers to park in its outside parking lots; go to historiclewesfarmersmarket.org to see parking and vendor information with maps. The market’s weekly newsletter lists demos and more; email info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org or call 302-644-1436 to be added to the list.
The market thanks The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, 2023 HLFM Market Champion, and all other sponsors for their continued support.
