Piney Point resident William Michael McFann was pronounced dead in the 19900 block of Poplar Hill Creek Lane in Leonardtown early on Saturday, Sept. 16, according to officials.

investigators say that McFann had placed a fireworks mortar tube on his upper chest and attempted to ignite it. The firework then exploded, killing him.

It is the second fireworks-related death in Maryland in 2023, following an incident in Charles County following the Fourth of July, when 20-year-old Damon Hammond was killed holding a mortar on Bannister Circle in Waldorf.

“A family's life has been changed forever, and this is a tragic reminder that fireworks should be left to the professionals,” Fire Marshal Brian Geraci stated.

“I've said it before, and I will say it again: the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend one of the many public fireworks displays throughout the state”
