N.Y. Mayor Mamdani launches 1,000 discounted U.S. Open tickets for residents

N.Y. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has secured 1,000 “affordable” tickets for the U.S. Open, which will be “distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to local residents” in response to “public concern over surging” ticket prices, according to Adam Crafton of THE ATHLETIC. Mamdani on Tuesday will announce that N.Y. residents “will be able to buy $100 tickets for main-draw matches taking place between Aug. 30 and through Sept. 8,” which would “appear to give New Yorkers the chance to buy tickets until the quarterfinal stage of the competition.” The tickets made available will “include seats in the two biggest show courts, Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium, as well as grounds passes.” Tickets to Arthur Ashe Stadium will also “grant spectators access to general admission seating on Armstrong and all other courts.” Tickets to Louis Armstrong Stadium will also “grant spectators access to general admission seating on all other courts except Arthur Ashe Stadium,” which is fully ticketed. The tickets will be available starting at 10am ET on Wednesday. In order to be eligible, buyers “must have a certified NYC zip code.” The tickets “will not be eligible for resale through Ticketmaster.” Sources said that any difference in price between Mamdani’s $100 tickets and the actual value is “being absorbed by USTA” (THE ATHLETIC, 8/25).
