USDA Funding Expands Iowa’s Cattle And Conservation Working Lands Program

Iowa’s Cattle and Conservation Working Lands Program will receive a $10 million federal investment to expand conservation efforts and support the state’s cattle industry. The five-year award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) comes through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program. It will help cattle producers and other farmers convert underperforming or highly erodible row crop acres into pasture and hay ground. The program began as a Taylor County pilot in 2016 and has expanded to several counties. It has enrolled more than 1,800 participants, converted 20,000 acres of cropland and supported more than 300,000 acres of cover crops. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says, “Iowa’s popular Cattle and Conservation Working Lands Program demonstrates that we can improve water quality, rebuild the U.S. cattle herd, and make the most of every acre of our valuable farmland. The Iowa Working Lands Program started out as a pilot project in Taylor County in 2016, and has since grown into a very successful conservation program in Iowa, while creating a model for other states. This RCPP gives us the flexibility to support infrastructure improvements and expand the program to serve livestock producers in more Iowa counties.” Naig adds the program reduces soil erosion, improves water quality, and creates grazing opportunities while keeping land in production. The new project is a partnership between the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), the Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and Ducks Unlimited.
