Sweetz Bakery closing its doors in Leesburg

Sad news on the local sweets scene as the owner of Sweetz Bakery in Leesburg has announced that she will be closing the store permanently this summer. The news was first reported by the Loudoun Times-Mirror.

“Our passion for creating delicious products and a desire to serve our community drove us through all the hard work and kept us going forward,” Trang Bowers shared on the store’s website.

“At a certain point, the struggle to keep everything going based on passion became uneven with the real challenges. Raw materials and labor costs have increased exponentially and finding the right candidates for our operations is increasingly difficult.”

Sweetz has been in business for 15 years and has sat in a prominent spot in the Battlefield Shopping Center for a decade.

That’s the retail center with Dick’s Sporting Goods and a DSW shoe store at Edwards Ferry Road NE and the Leesburg Bypass.

The bakery is known primarily for its many types of gourmet cupcakes, coming in flavors such as Red Velvet, Yellow Coconut, and Chocolate Peanut Butter. Sweetz also offers gluten-free and vegan cupcakes.

Staffers tell us the last day in business will be August 20. However, the popular cupcake vending machine out front will stay in operation a little longer — likely through the end of November.
