Famed Anchor Bar aiming for July opening in Leesburg

The new Anchor Bar — the original home to the famed Buffalo wing — is under construction at the Village at Leesburg. And now we’ve learned they could be open as soon as early July.

The Anchor Bar — or more correctly called “Frank & Teressa’s Anchor Bar – The Original Buffalo Wing” — has taken over the space vacated by Eggspectation when that restaurant closed its doors in 2020.

According to legend, it was back in 1964 when one of the bartenders at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo NY asked his mom — Teressa — to whip up something for some hungry friends who had just arrived. She fried up some wings and topped them with spicy sauce and the Buffalo wing was born.

The brand is now franchising and expanding around the eastern United States — including its debut Virginia location in Leesburg. The Burn first reported on the Anchor Bar coming here last November.

A large new bar has been built just inside the front doors and there are folding doors between the patio and the bar that can be opened in nice weather.

Meanwhile, a large pergola that opens and closes has been built over the patio to provide protection from the elements.

The hiring of staff is underway. (If you’re interested, here’s a link to the hiring page.) A firm opening date hasn’t been set yet, but if things go smoothly, the GM at the Leesburg Anchor Bar — Jim McGavin — says they are aiming for the first couple of weeks in July.
