Kansas, Wyandotte leaders resolve Chiefs stadium dispute

Leaders in Kansas and Wyandotte County said that disagreements about the proposed new Chiefs stadium project “were resolved, and a lawsuit against the state would be dismissed,” according to Kendrick Calfee of the K.C. STAR. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and Unified Government Mayor Christal Watson said on Friday that a plan was “created to allow the county to keep local control of development near the stadium, a major issue raised in the suit.” The lawsuit, filed in early October, took aim at legislation that “created the Kansas Sports Facilities Authority, a government agency designed to oversee construction of the stadium.” The lawsuit argued that the sports authority would “illegally strip local control from the UG.” According to a news release, a new agreement “confirms that the UG and Wyandotte County Board of Public Utilities (BPU) will keep jurisdiction over all ancillary development surrounding the stadium.” This includes local planning and zoning, and BPU payments in lieu of taxes. The UG keeps jurisdiction of development surrounding the stadium. The sports authority will act as the Chiefs’ landlord in Kansas. The board includes a representative from the team, the commerce secretary, appointees of the governor and legislative leaders and local representatives from K.C., Kansas, and Olathe. The stadium and a new training facility in Olathe will be “funded through the state’s bonding program called sales tax and revenue (STAR) bonds, which stretch across a two-county district” (K.C. STAR, 10/24).
