Local Spotlight: Columbia Brew’s Valentine’s menu brings a new take on traditional coffee shop drinks
It’s a Wednesday afternoon, and I inevitably find myself trekking to my 5th hour AP Statistics class with a seemingly 500-pound backpack and even more homework to complete that night. Photo Gallery: Night Moves / Discotek Mama
Night Moves have been busy. The soulful psych rockers have essentially been on tour nonstop since October (with a small break in December), but the Minneapolis band made one more stop in Lawrence before heading back home. They came to White Schoolhouse in support of their latest release, Double Life, along with local rockers Discotek Mama. The North Lawrence venue continued to show that putting on great shows is possible with tons of community and local business support. Getting a full house out on Superbowl Sunday is no small feat, so bravo to LAAND on this one (we’re essentially allergic to sports anyway).

Topeka teen almost quit the violin. Now she's a champion fiddler
When Sophia Johnson was 4 years old, she thought her babysitter was cool. Her sitter played the violin, which inspired Johnson to give it a try. But Johnson repeatedly talked about quitting lessons, claiming she hated it. Almost 10 years later, she's still playing. "She'd be like, 'I don't want to practice anymore,'" said Jessica Johnson, her mother. "I mean, she was this big (indicating she was small), and I'm like, 'Just quit then.' ... 'No, I don't want to be quitter. I don't want to quit. I don't want to quit.' So, that I think is what kept her going." Johnson is now 13, and she can't get enough of playing the violin, especially fiddling. Johnson's father Eric Johnson said her commitment to music is impressive. "I hear all the hours of practice that she puts in on her own, and she is very self-driven," Eric Johnson said. "You have times that she thought about quitting. You know, I hardly remember those because she plays and plays and plays. "So, when I hear her perform, I am so proud of all the practice that she's put in on her own in her room. So, it's neat to hear her
