LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Deputies say a man had to be rescued from a car after a crash in Lawrence Township.

It happened around 1:45 a.m. Thursday on the 48000 block of Red Arrow Highway, near 48th Street, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

A caller reported seeing a car with its lights on in the woods, off the road. When deputies arrived, they found the driver unresponsive inside the car. Deputies say they tried to free him but could not.

Firefighters helped rescue the driver, who was still unresponsive, according to the sheriff’s office. Nobody else was in the car.

Deputies say the driver, a 48-year-old Berrien Springs man, was taken to the hospital for severe injuries.

The sheriff’s office says it believes the man went off the road and hit a large tree, then continued into the woods and hit another tree.

Deputies are still investigating.
