Volunteers with Moms Demand Action are inviting the Lawrence community to an event Saturday to raise awareness and take a stand against gun violence.
Wear Orange began in 2015 with a group of teenagers in Chicago who wanted to honor their friend, Hadiya Pendleton, who was killed in a shooting on a playground at age 15. Orange was one of Hadiya’s favorite colors, and it’s the color hunters wear in the woods for safety.
“Today, Wear Orange honors Hadiya and the more than 120 people who are shot and killed every day in America, as well as the hundreds more who are wounded and the countless others who witness acts of gun violence,” according to a news release from event organizers. “Wear Orange brings together survivors, activists, and communities all over America to demand change.”
The Kansas chapter of Moms Demand Action is partnering with Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund to host the local event, which includes a survivor art installation and activities for kids, according to the release. It’s set for 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3 at South Park on the west side near the playground.
“We will also collect much needed toiletries and supplies for Willow Domestic Violence Center, including diapers, natural hair care products, hair brushes, feminine hygiene products, detergent pods, dishwashing pods, children’s bath products, and children’s medicine (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, cold medicine),” according to the event webpage. “Please only bring full-sized, unopened, unexpired items.”
