LAUDERHILL, FLA. (WSVN) - Gunfire tore through a Lauderhill neighborhood, sending a 15-year-old boy to the hospital.
At around 5 a.m. on Saturday, Lauderhill Police received two ShotSpotter alerts in the area of Northwest 59th Avenue and 21st Street. Shortly after, they received several 911 calls.
Upon arrival, officers found the young victim suffering from multiple shotgun wounds.
Area residents woke up to find officers blocking off their neighborhood.
“My day is messed up. There’s a lot of shooting in my neighborhood,” said a neighbor who identified himself as Thomas.
Lauderhill Fire Rescue transported the teen to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. Officials said the patient underwent surgery and is listed in stable condition.
“I had to check up on my son, because I’ve got a 15-year-old son, you know what I’m saying?” said Thomas. “He’s at his grandma’s house.”
Crime scene technicians used metal detectors to search for bullets and shell casings. They also marked pieces of clothing on the ground and took photos.
As they searched for clues, a peace walk to end gun violence was taking place around the corner.
The irony was not lost on anyone.
“The son, I just hope it’s nobody that I know,” said an area resident. “I hope it gets better, because all these kids are, like, misled.”
Police said they do not have the shooter in custody, as they attempt to determine whether the gunman and victim knew each other and what led to the shooting.
