Five people, including a family of four, were hospitalized following a multi-vehicle accident that turned a bus on its side in Lauderdale Lakes Saturday morning, officials say.

Around 11 a.m., Broward Sheriff’s Lauderdale Lakes district deputies and Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue responded to the rollover crash in the 4800 Block of West Oakland Park Boulevard, the Sheriff’s Office said in an email.

A bus and a sedan with a family inside appeared to have collided at the intersection, according to Fire Rescue Chief Michael Kane. The bus had rolled over and was on its side in the eastbound lanes of Oakland Park Boulevard, while the sedan had heavy front-end damage and came to rest on the median.

Paramedics transported all five people to a local hospital. The bus driver, the only occupant of the bus, had minor injuries and was taken to Florida Medical Center. The family, a man and a woman and two children, were taken to Broward Health. The man and woman had serious injuries and were transported as trauma alerts. The two children had minor injuries.

Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue remained on the scene of the accident a little after 11 a.m. Saturday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet.

“#BSFR is operating on the scene of a Mass Casualty Incident involving 5 patients involved in a vehicle accident with rollover,” the tweet read. “… Heavy delays in area.”

It was unclear what led to the crash. BSO Lauderdale Lakes district detectives are investigating the cause.

In a video posted with the tweet, fire rescue workers examined the bus, still flipped on its side, as a group of spectators stood nearby and watched.
