U.S. Postal Service hosts prevention event for Dog Bite Awareness Week

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) —
A Las Vegas mail carrier is doing what she can to keep her and others safe on the job.

The U.S. Postal Service hosted an informational prevention event to recognize Dog Bite Awareness Week.
A local mail carrier offered advice for preventing dog attacks and shared statistics on the issue.
According to the postal service, Las Vegas ranks number 21 for cities with dog attacks.

There were 51 postal employees throughout Nevada who were attacked by dogs last year, that's up from 31 back in 2021.
The event works in part of its campaign promoting “Even good dogs have bad days.”
Safety reminders for letter carriers include:
- Not startle a dog
- Keep their eyes on any dog
- Never assume a dog will not bite
- Make some noise or rattle a fence to alert a dog if entering a yard
- Never attempt to pet or feed a dog
- Place their foot against an outward swinging door to prevent a dog from escaping
