New data obtained by News 3 reveals car thefts happening in some parts of the valley are happening at record high speed.
More than 5,800 cars have been stolen in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department jurisdiction so far this year, according to News 3 data analysis based on LVMPD numbers.
The area with the most stolen cars is the northwest, where auto theft was up 92% last year.

Numbers show that the number of stolen cars in the northwest has increased from week to week.
Just look at April 8 to May 5, when there were 109 car thefts reported to LVMPD a week later that spiked to 167%.
LVMPD Captain Joe Lepore says the recent boom is only partially explained by social media videos showing how some models can be hotwired.
"The TikTok trend out for Kias and Hyundai's was based on a dare more than anything else," explains Lepore. "So, when you're looking at the vehicles being stolen, they were being stolen more for, can I do it?"
