A man has come forward and surrendered to police after being involved in a shooting that paralyzed a man last year near downtown Las Vegas.
Emanuel Smith is facing several charges, including attempted murder, after police linked him to a shooting that took place on June 30, 2022, near Charleston Blvd and Maryland Parkway.
According to the arrest report, a man was found inside a dumpster suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and lying in a pool of blood.
He was taken to UMC Trauma, where staff said he suffered a gunshot wound in his center back, left upper arm, and two to his left thigh. He also had a bullet lodged in his spine and in his lungs.
Detectives made contact with the man, who said he didn't want to know who shot him, and due to him being homeless, he didn't have any contact information or an area where he could be found.
Police would later send out a media release on August 10 but closed the case on the 12th after the victim continued to be uncooperative and no witnesses or leads had come forward.
On September 21, detectives received information identifying Emanuel Smith as the suspect. He matched the description of the man in the surveillance video, but a photo lineup could not be conducted because of what the victim had told police.
On May 8, 2023, officers were contacted by Don Green, who was representing Smith. He told police his client wanted to surrender peacefully on a future date. A time and date would later be set for May 25, 2023.
Both Smith and his lawyer arrived at the Downtown Command Center and he was placed under arrest. Smith would not provide officers with further information regarding what happened the night of the incident.
Authorities concluded that they believe the two men were in some sort of argument inside the dumpster when Smith shot at Francis.
A records check also found that Smith was a four-time convicted felon, three times in California and once in Nevada.
Records show he appeared in court on May 26 and was later released from custody.
