What is up with Jimmy G and the Raiders?

On Thursday, Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels confirmed that Jimmy Garoppolo − who was signed this offseason after six seasons with the San Francisco 49ersis sidelined for the start of organized team activities.

Garoppolo, who signed a three-year contract with the Raiders in March worth up to $67.5 million, still is recovering from a broken left foot injury suffered in December1.

While McDaniels did not offer specifics other than that Garoppolo's return to the field "could be" pushed back to as far as training camp in July, The Athletic reported that Garoppolo underwent surgery in March after he signed with the team.

Then, over the Memorial Day weekend, details emerged about Jimmy G's contract with the Raiders. Pro Football Talk obtained a copy of Garoppolo's Raiders contract and reported that it contains a waiver and release clause, Addendum G, that is located at the very end of the deal.

The addendum offers Las Vegas the protection to terminate the contract without having to pay Garoppolo "for any reason related to the Waiver and Release attached as Addendum G." The addendum also clears the Raiders of any liability related to Garoppolo's future health.

The Raiders' quarterback depth chart currently includes Garoppolo, 14-year veteran Brian Hoyer, Chase Garbers − who enters his second season with the team, but has yet to appear in an NFL game − and rookie fourth-round draft pick Aidan O'Connell.

This offseason, the Raiders allowed Derek Carr − a four-time Pro Bowl selection during his nine seasons with the team − to leave via free agency and sign with the New Orleans Saints.

Could Jimmy Garoppolo be in for a short tenure in Las Vegas?

'TNF' flex approved to mixed reviews

Last week, the NFL's owners approved a modified resolution that allows for the flexing of "Thursday Night Football" games late in the season in order to offer more attractive matchups for Amazon Prime Video in the key slot on the weekly schedule. The flexible scheduling for "Thursday Night Football" will apply for games in Weeks 13-172.

The resolution was met with some public pushback, most notably from Raiders owner Mark Davis, who said, "just make the schedule and play it." USA TODAY Sports' Jarrett Bell wrote that the NFL made it clear that the TV audience is much more valuable than the in-stadium crowd.

1 That injury, of course, opened the door for Brock Purdy's unexpected rise from Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL draft to helping guide the 49ers to the NFC championship game.

2 The "TNF" games that could be impacted by this new resolution are Seattle Seahawks at Dallas Cowboys in Week 13, New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 14, San Diego Chargers at Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15, New Orleans Saints at Los Angeles Rams in Week 16 and New York Jets at Cleveland Browns in Week 17.
