As summer-like weather conditions continue, a former lifeguard with more than a decade of experience is sharing ways people can be safe around water this season.
Cade Vereen, a former lifeguard with 15 years of experience and the regional general manager for Cowabunga Vegas Water Parks, said even if you are a confident swimmer, he encourages everyone to wear a life-vest.
"It takes literally seconds for anyone to drown," Vereen said.
Vereen said one of the most important things to remember is to make sure you are wearing a lifejacket that fits properly and is coastguard approved.
"Another really easy reminder for all of the parents and guardians who are watching potential swimmers, make sure you are actively in the water and participating with your kiddo or with your friend, being an active water watcher," Vereen said.
"Just being actively involved in the process of being in the pool or the aquatic facility will help maybe be the difference between life and or something a lot worse, someone going to the emergency room or maybe someone not making it."
He said another key point to staying safe in the water is to know your abilities, know where your strengths and your weaknesses are, and be aware when you've gone too deep into the water.
He added if you feel like you are becoming fatigued, it may be time to take a break away from the water and out of the sun.
