Parents, if you own a gun, your children know where you hide it; that's the message Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers are trying to get out.
Detectives say they've seen a recent pattern of kids' accessing unsecured weapons across the valley.
"So I always recommend something easy to lock and store a firearm in. This is the simplest form," Kris Chanski, The Range 702 CEO.
Clark County School District officials, confiscated 32 handguns from students this school year between August and May.
Jerrell Garrett, LVMPD Detective, says kids accidentally fire weapons, take them to school or purposefully shoot themselves.
"So far, there have been two suicides in which children have taken their lives by using a gun. Last year there was only one," said Detective Garrett.
LVMPD couldn't speak about the current cases under investigation; however, he says the suicides were linked to bullying.
"They're struggling with some mental illness of bullying, and sometimes that leads to them deciding, hey, I'm gonna take my life. I will use my parent's gun to take my life," he added.
Last year, a Henderson teenager pleaded guilty to the shooting death of his 10-year-old brother. The boy's attorney said it was an accident.
Jeanne Marsala, Sunrise Hospital's Director of Safe Kids' Trauma Services, says they also see friends discovering unsecured guns during play dates.
"We want parents to have the nerve to ask the question to their children's friends' parents. Do you own a gun? Where is it secured? I need to make sure before my child comes over," Jeanne Marsala, Sunrise Hospital Director of Safe Kids Clark County Trauma Services.
