The driver of the truck that dislodged a clearance beam on a freeway, causing the beam to fall and kill a Las Vegas police detective, is now charged with vehicular manslaughter.
Las Vegas Municipal Court records show that the city attorney's office filed a criminal complaint Thursday against Glen Kenison, also known as Glen Joseph Lewis.
Justin Terry, 45, was killed when a beam fell onto his car while he was driving on southbound U.S. 95 at the Centennial Bowl in the northwest valley on June 10 last year.
At the time, Nevada highway officials said an overloaded construction truck carrying equipment hit an early warning beam and knocked it out of place. That caused the beam to fall on Terry's car, which was following behind the truck.
The complaint alleges Kenison was negligent in driving the tractor-trailer, which was loaded with a backhoe loader and a water truck and exceeded the clearance of the beam.
A vehicular manslaughter charge is a misdemeanor under Nevada state law.
His family had filed a wrongful death civil suit earlier this year against Kenison, Las Vegas Paving Corp. and Western States Contracting Inc., alleging negligence and breach of their duty to care.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said Terry was a member of the department for just under 21 years, assigned to the Homicide Sex Crimes Bureau, Sexual Assault & Abuse Section.
