A balloon was released for a Legacy High School student athlete who was shot and killed over the weekend at a birthday party.
The emotional goodbye for Omarion Wilson, 17, happened before a track meet Wednesday afternoon at the Longhorn’s stadium. Family, friends, and teammates of Wilson gathered on the field before the start of the races. Some hugged each other while others cried remembering the senior who played football and ran track.
Wilson’s mother addressed the crowd and shared her heartbreak.
“I’m hurt, I’m lost, I’m broken,” Lequinna Wiggins said. “People keep asking me how I’m ok. Don’t ask me that because I’m not ok. I don’t know when I’ll be ok. Somebody took my son from me and I’m broken into pieces. I feel like I’ve been run over. I don’t know how to explain my feelings.”
After the balloon release, Wiggins received Wilson’s number 22 football jersey, which is now retired, and a signed helmet. She was also given the gold medal he won last week while anchoring the 4 x100 throwers relay team and the first-place trophy from the meet.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said Wilson was shot while attending an 18th birthday party inside a room at the Platinum Hotel and Spa on Flamingo Road at Koval Lane on Saturday night. Prior to the shooting, additional people came to the party that were not invited and an argument escalated to a shooting. Wilson was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
No arrests have been by Metro Police in the case.
