Authorities took a juvenile into custody for threatening comments after responding to a report of a person with a gun near Shadow Ridge High School in the far north Las Vegas valley.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police say they and Clark County School District Police both responded and the school was placed on a hard lockdown.
One person was detained in connection with the incident, LVMPD said.
Assistant Sheriff Jim Seebock and CCSD Police Lt. Bryan Zink told reporters that at about 10:15 a.m., Las Vegas police got a request from school police about a suspect inside the school with a gun.
A juvenile male made threatening comments that another student reported to an administrator. They declined to detail the comment, but they said it was concerning enough to lead them to believe the juvenile could have had a gun.
School police were searching for an outstanding suspect when LVMPD officers arrived, according to Seebock, and a lockdown was put in place as both agencies combed the campus.
He said police eventually found a suspect, identified as a male juvenile, and took him into custody. No injuries were reported, and that juvenile will be charged with making "terroristic threats," Seebock said.
No gun has been found, though police were still searching for any possible firearm that might have been left somewhere on campus, he added. Students will be released on a staggered schedule once the school is cleared.
Both Seebock and Zink said officers for the two agencies responded swiftly and appropriately to investigate the report and search the school.
"We will not wait, we will not hesitate," Seebock said, explaining that several other agencies worked with them on the response. "Metro police, school police, we will go in there to keep your kids safe."
Seebock said the investigation leads police to believe the juvenile in custody was the only person involved.
"This entire situation could have been avoided if the young man had not said what he said and caused this entire cascading effect," Zink said.
