The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) is investigating a deadly crash.
On Tuesday, at about 2:30 p.m., a multiple-vehicle fatal crash happened on West Desert Inn Road, east of the intersection of South Jones Boulevard.
According to LVMPD, a 2020 Land Rover Defender was stopped westbound in the left turn lane of Dessert Inn Road, preparing to turn onto Jones Boulevard, alongside a 2022 Chevrolet Malibu and a 2013 Honda Civic, who were both right behind it.
A 2019 Tesla Model 3 was traveling eastbound on Desert Inn east of the intersection of Jones in the left-most travel lane, with a 2010 Ford Flex also right behind it.
A 2005 Nissan Titan was traveling westbound to Desert Inn in the second of three through travel lanes when police say the driver began changing lanes to the first of three through travel lanes and lost control of the vehicle.
The Nissan then hit the rear of the Honda, which pushed the Honda forward and hit the Chevrolet. The Chevrolet was also driven forward and hit the back of the Land Rover. The Nissan continued in a southwest direction crossing the center median of Desert Inn when it redirected westbound in the eastbound lanes of Desert Inn and hit the front of the Ford.
Officials say the driver of the Tesla attempted to avoid a crash with the Nissan and struck the center median of Desert Inn.
All occupants of the Ford and the driver of the Nissan were transported to UMC Trauma by ambulance for treatment. The 73-year-old woman passenger of the Ford succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead by trauma staff.
The Clark County Coroner's office identified her as Mirta C. Curbelo of Las Vegas. Official rulings on the cause and manner of death were still pending as of Wednesday morning.
The 63-year-old driver of the Nissan was the only occupant inside the vehicle at the time of the crash and was listed in serious condition as of Tuesday.
Police say impairment is not suspected in the crash.
The passenger's death marks the 25th traffic-related fatality for 2023.
The crash remains under investigation.
