A 33-year-old man was arrested and accused of assaulting a Las Cruces Police Department K-9 officer after he reportedly drove drunk Tuesday, according to court documents.
Raymond Hernandez, of Anthony, New Mexico, is charged with aggravated D.W.I., two counts of battery on a peace officer and assault on a peace officer.
Las Cruces police were initially called out to 1855 West Picacho Ave. for an assault in progress.
When an officer got to the scene, the victim said the alleged attacker left in a silver Chevy.
The officer found the vehicle nearby at West Picacho Avenue and North 14th Street and pulled it over.
Hernandez, who was the driver, slurred his speech, had bloodshot watery eyes and smelled of alcohol, according to the officer's notes.
The officer said Hernandez stumbled out of the vehicle and then tried to fight officers on the scene, court documents state.
Hernandez reportedly refused to provide a breath sample or take a field sobriety test.
Hernandez was taken to the hospital where he kicked and kneed the K-9 officer before attempting to hit the K-9 with his head, according to court documents.
He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
