The Michigan House has adopted a resolution recognizing Tuesday as "World Down Syndrome Day."
The day celebrates global accomplishments and contributions from those with down syndrome, or Trisomy 21, having three copies of their 21st chromosome.
Michigan House Representative Kathy Schmaltz (R - Jackson) presented a resolution.
"Today we celebrate the unique strengths and talents people with down syndrome exhibit, and recognize the countless contributions they make to their families community, and society," Schmaltz said. "By raising awareness and understanding, we can promote greater inclusion, equity and respect for all, and help reduce the barriers people with down syndrome face every day."
Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan, or DSAWM, represented the down syndrome community in Lansing as Rep. Schmaltz presents the resolution, according to DSAWM.
“Advocacy is an important part of our mission at DSAWM," Melissa Perrin, Program Director for the DSAWM, said. "We want people to know that those with Down syndrome are more alike than they are different from their neurotypical peers. We’ve found that the best way to teach that is to create opportunities for the public to meet and spend time with our members. It’s amazing to see how many friendships have been created over the years."

Support organizations across the state encouraged Michiganders to show their support by participating in the #RockYourSocksMI campaign, and asked Michiganders to wear a colorful pair of mismatched socks to spread awareness Tuesday, according to DSAWM.
