Dexter field hockey retools, grows in new look after graduating 10 seniors
Dexter has been a stalwart field hockey program, one of the many coming out of the loaded Southeastern Conference that also features the Ann Arbor schools, Saline and Chelsea. But this team, having graduated 10 seniors from a state runner up in 2025, was always going to have an uphill climb to be back in contending position as the postseason arrived. “We knew we had a lot of work to do,” head coach Keely Tamer said. Alum at the helm, Brighton field hockey rides historic season into playoffs
Once a player for what was then a club program at Brighton, Emily Whitlow is now the varsity head coach for the very same program. And Whitlow, a former Brighton star and Converse University captain, has seen the Brighton squad she’s taken over hit its stride this season, rolling out of the regular season and into the playoffs with an 11-6-1 record on the year, a stark turnaround from the 5-9-1 season that Brighton had last year. And Brighton won its first-ever Kensington Lakes Activities Association title this season. “It's very exciting to be coaching with the school that I went to,” Whitlow said. More: Sign up for our new Michigan Sidelines statewide high school sports newsletter Brighton enters the postseason against powerhouse Saline on a heater, having won seven games in a row and allowing one goal in that span. Whitlow is ultimately hopeful that this recent run of play can be carried into the postseason, a sign of her team peaking at the right time. “Everything was working and they just were, they wanted to win for each other,” Whitlow said of the winning streak to end the year. “And they were out there playing for each other
