LANDRUM, S.C. (WSPA) – The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office is responding to an officer-involved shooting.

According to Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright, the shooting happened early Monday morning around 4:30 a.m. at the Bon Aire Apartments in Landrum.

The sheriff said when deputies arrived, a person was dead.

The victim was identified as 53-year-old Shana McClain of Landrum. The coroner said initial exams show she suffered from multiple sharp edged injuries.

Deputies said they attempted to speak to the suspect, who was armed with a knife. Deputies then deployed a stun gun.

The sheriff said the suspect, identified as Freddie Edwards, 58, came at deputies again and was shot by deputies. He was pronounced dead at 4:39 a.m.

“We tried to deploy a taser on him, it didn’t work, we tried to deploy a dog, and it didn’t work. He started charging the officers and that’s when two of my deputies and a Landrum police officer shot,” said Sheriff Wright.

Sheriff Wright said they tried to de-escalate the situation.

“I do know that after he was tased, he still fought through that. I’m not sure if both probes got in him, or not, we don’t know that yet,” he said. “The dog should have, in a normal situation, at least slowed him down a little bit.”

Edwards’s sister, Lisa, said she is heartbroken over the whole situation.

“My brother, I just wished he had turned the other way and just came home. I just wish he would have came home,” she said.

Edwards’s family said he and his girlfriend, McClain, were living together and the two did not have a good relationship, but the call Monday morning came as a shock.

“We’re looking for answers and closure and truth for this,” said Lisa.

“I didn’t expect to wake up this morning and something like this happen,” said Tracy Lindsey, Edwards’s niece.

Sheriff Wright said law enforcement did not want anyone to get hurt.

“It wasn’t just a come out straight out of the holster and start shooting, none of that stuff. They tried very hard to save this man’s life and he just wasn’t having any of it,” said the Sheriff.

He said the Landrum Police Department responded often to the apartment where the incident happened.

He is asking for prayers for both families and law enforcement.

No officers were injured.

Both Spartanburg County deputies have been placed on paid leave during the investigation as standard procedure.

SLED is also investigating the shooting.
