Juvenile armed robbery suspect dies after gunfire exchange in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — UPDATE (9:30 p.m.) – The female suspect that was shot by the Lakewood agent has succumbed to her injuries, police said. Additionally, both suspects were confirmed to be juveniles.

A Lakewood police agent was shot while confronting one of two juveniles suspected of robbing a mail carrier.

According to Lakewood PD, the armed robbery occurred near South Oak Street and West Dakota Avenue while the USPS employee was working. The female suspects were able to get several items from the mail carrier.

There was then a confrontation between the suspects and law enforcement on the same block near West Alameda Avenue.

Police said one of the female suspects pointed her gun at agents and the agents fired at her.

Life-saving measures were immediately started and she was taken to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Lakewood police are investigating to confirm whether the suspect fired her weapon after aiming it at agents. Police said preliminary information pointed to that being the case.

A Lakewood agent was also shot and taken to the hospital but their injuries were not life-threatening and they were expected to make a full recovery.

Police have also confirmed that the postal worker in the incident was not injured.

A second female suspect was later taken into custody by ATF agents and Lakewood police in Frederick.

The Lakewood Police Department is currently the lead agency investigating, but that could change as the robbery victim is a federal employee.
