In what has become a tradition in the Oregon high school track and field scene, Lake Oswego’s Mia Brahe-Pedersen took to the track at Hayward Field and left the crowd in awe.
The junior finished the event with a new Oregon state record of 11.00 seconds. That beats her previous best of 11.08, which was set earlier in the year.
“I was that close to going sub-11. Which is, hey, I just know it’s coming soon,” Brahe-Pedersen said. “The fact that I was able to finish on top like I felt I was supposed to and then get a PR on top of that and do it with (Oregon City’s Sophia Beckmon) beside me, that was just magical.”
Brahe-Pedersen, who spent her entire sophomore season battling for Margaret Johnson-Bailes’ 1968 record of 11.30, has spent her junior year rewriting her own state-best times. With the pace she’s been on this spring, Brahe-Pedersen said she knows that she will see times that start with a 10 in her future.
“It’s going to be in the cards for me for the rest of the summer,” she said. “If it doesn’t happen the next time I race, it’s going to happen the time after that. It’s always a possibility.”
Earlier in the day, Brahe-Pedersen was the second leg of the Lakers’ girls 4x100-meter relay team (with Riley Ma, Josie Donelson and Marina Turpen) that finished first with a time of 46.90. That’s a season best for the group and fourth-best in state history.
Brahe-Pedersen will still compete in the 200-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay on Saturday. The Lakers are the reigning Class 6A team champions and are among the favorites this season.
