ORION TWP. (WWJ) – A month after Thomas Schleicher was killed after another driver hit a road sign, sending it flying through his windshield, police are still looking for the person responsible.

Crime Stoppers of Michigan is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for tips that lead to the arrest of the other driver.

The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. on Feb. 21 in the area of Lapeer and Waldon Roads in Orion Township.

The driver of a car, possibly a silver Kia Optima, veered into the median on northbound Lapeer and slammed into a road sign, sending it flying through the air, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

At the same time, Schleicher, 31, was headed south on Lapeer in his 2013 Volkswagen Passat. The road sign went through the windshield and hit Schleicher. The Passat then veered off the road and eventually stopped when it hit a tree near Waldon.

The other driver did not stop after the crash.

Schleicher, who was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was taken to the hospital. He succumbed to injuries sustained more than a week later on March 1.

A month after the crash, authorities have still not identified the other driver. Two days after the crash, police said the other vehicle may have been a silver or gray 2013-15 Kia Optima.

Authorities are still asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward.

“We really need the public’s help with this case,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “The individual that caused the death of Thomas fled the scene after striking the sign that killed him. If anyone was in the area, saw anything, or has knowledge, please help us find that person and receive a substantial reward. The car would have had front end damage from the crash.”

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the driver. Anyone who may have seen the crash, the vehicle, or knows the driver should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

As always, all Crime Stoppers tipsters remain anonymous.
