SBU News: Social Welfare Professor receives national award from the Department of Justice
Dr. Michelle Ballan recognized for research related to intimate partner violence against those with disabilities. Michelle Ballan, PhD, MSW, Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University, has received the Building Knowledge Through Research Award from the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), a program of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Ballan is among only 8 individuals or organizations honored nationally by the DOJ for their outstanding work as crime victim service professionals during the 2024 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Farmingdale is joining the list of Long Island school districts with armed guards on patrol, but teachers and parents are conflicted on whether they are actually a deterrent. At least 20 of Long Island's 125 school districts now have or plan to hire armed security guards, which could cost $1 million per year. Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center To Hold Annual FREE Rabies Clinic on Saturday, June 1
The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center has scheduled the Annual Free Rabies Clinic on Saturday, June 1 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The event, which is held in conjunction with the Suffolk County Health Department, offers free rabies vaccine for dogs, cats and ferrets. Old Bethpage Man Busted for DWI After Crashing His Car into 7-11 & Fleeing Scene, Cops Say
The Public Information Office reports the arrest of an Old Bethpage man for Driving While Intoxicated that occurred on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 5:14 pm in Bethpage. According to detectives, Bureau of Special Operations Officers responded to 150 Main Street for a vehicle into a building. Upon arrival it was determined that a single vehicle had struck the 7-11 store front window pane, causing it to break. The operator of the vehicle had fled the scene in a red Toyota 4Runner prior to police arrival. A short time later, the fleeing vehicle was involved in a collision with a 2017 Grey Subaru Sedan being operating by a 46-year-old female at the intersection of Conklin Ave and Main Street in Farmingdale.
