(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Lake County Indiana authorities on Thursday found dozens of dogs at a suspected puppy mill operation, officials said.
Lake County detectives received a tip this week about a man who had been purchasing “unusually large” amounts of dog food and animal medical supplies, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
That led authorities to a Crown Point home and a bar near Rensselaer, where they served search warrants and discovered “dozens of dogs in various conditions” and four dead canines, officials said.
The dogs taken into custody include one mountain dog, seven American bull dogs and 29 French bulldogs. Lake County Animal Adoption & Control is caring for the animals, the sheriff’s department said.
A 41-year-old man is being questioned in connection with the case.
“As a person who loves pets, I am appalled at the treatment of these animals,” Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a prepared statement.
