LaGRANGE, Ind. (WANE) – At Lakeland High School, the Lakers baseball program made waves over the weekend.

Lakeland won their first NECC Tournament title 1997 over the weekend after knocking off Garrett, 6-5, in the championship game. The Lakers won four games in six days to end a 27-year drought without a NECC Tournament title.

After bringing home some hardware, we’re proud to present Lakeland baseball as your Optimum Performance Sports Team of the Week!

With only a core of four seniors, Lakeland’s underclassmen are stepping up in a 12-4 start to the season. Junior Carson Mickem is batting .391 with a team-best 14 RBI and 15 hits, including three doubles, two triples and two home runs. Keyan Arroyo also has 15 hits with 11 RBI.

Meanwhile, Jayden Marshall has stepped up as a top player in his senior season. The two-way player has eight RBI and a home run at the plate. On the bump, Marshall has fanned 18 batters this season. Cole Frost, Taylor Wells, Bo Kerns and Mason Walker round out the senior class as they lead the way for a young Lakeland team.

Lakeland looks to keep rolling as NECC regular season play resumes this week. The Lakers visit West Noble on Tuesday, followed by a home game against Central Noble on Thursday.
