Nine area athletes qualify for girls IHSAA state track and field finals

LAFAYETTE - Autumn Craig is having herself a week.

Six days after the Harrison senior committed to Purdue's track and field program, Craig assured herself a trip to another Big Ten track venue to close her high school career.

Craig placed second in the shot put with a toss of 40 feet, one-half inch and third in discus at 119 feet on Tuesday at Scheumann Stadium's regional, qualifying for the IHSAA state finals in both events.

Craig is one of nine area athletes who will compete in the state meet on June 3 at Indiana University's Haugh Track and Field Complex.

Like Craig, West Lafayette's Joselyn Jundos and Henny Schminke will compete in two events at the state finals.

The Red Devil juniors were part of West Side's 3,200 relay team that finished fourth on Tuesday, one spot back of an automatic berth in the state finals. However, Jundos, Schminke, Shannon Dineen and Annie Dunford hit a state-cut time, finishing in 9:24.12 to qualify.

Jundos also placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 57.10 seconds and Schminke was third in the 800 in 2:16.56 to earn state berths.

Lafayette Jeff junior Jade Wiese returns to the state meet as a long jump qualifier after placing second in the regional with a leap of 17-9 1/4.

Seeger had two athletes qualify for the state meet.

Hadessah Austin was the lone area regional champion at Lafayette Jeff on Tuesday, winning the 3,200 in 11:05.06, while fellow Patriot Paige Laffoon's fourth-place jump of 5-4 in the high jump was a state cut.

In the Portage Regional, South Newton's Addysen Standish qualified for state by winning the 300-meter hurdles in a state-cut time of 45.20.
