Friday was International Transgender Day of Visibility.
The day celebrates the successes of transgender and gender non-conforming people and is marked with rallies across the country.
One of these rallies was held Friday night in La Center.
Organizers say it doubled as a protest against the local school district's new pronoun policy.
Previously, teachers could ask students about their gender identity, name change, or pronoun change, and not have to tell the student's family.
The policy change says teachers cannot ask those questions.
The organizers of the rally said they had a message for youth who don't have support systems.
"You may not feel like you are loved or seen or accepted based on what you see on social media or with the counter-protesters over there, or whoever is spewing hatred. But we see you and we love you, and we are going to fight for you, and you have a place in this world," Emily Hancock, the rally organizer, said.
There was a small counter-protest at the location. KATU’s photojournalist at the scene said the rallies remained peaceful.
KATU reached out to the school district for a comment on the protest but did not receive a response Friday.
