Pueblo courthouse decked out for Cannon Game rally

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Now in its 17th year, the annual Rally in the Rotunda saw the Pueblo County Courthouse decked out in the colors of Pueblo East and Pueblo South High Schools ahead of Friday night’s Cannon Game matchup.

A tradition started by Pueblo County Assessor Frank Beltran 17 years ago–the Rally in the Rotunda has been held at the courthouse every year for the the Bell Game, Cannon Game, and Pigskin Classic. The Pigskin Classic rally was held in the rotunda on Friday, Aug. 30 ahead of Pueblo West’s dominating win over Pueblo County 41-0.

The cheer teams performed in the rotunda at 11:30 Friday morning under banners of black and yellow, flooding the courthouse with team spirit.

For some on the cheer teams, this year’s rally brings some sadness along with the excitement, as this will be their final year cheering as high schoolers.

“It’s a very bittersweet moment, I’ve been dancing since I was little,” said Pueblo South senior cheerleader Jayden Archuleta-Rosales. “So it finally coming to an end is very bittersweet, but regardless, at the end of the day, no matter who gets the cannon, it’s going to be a fun game.”

Pueblo East senior cheerleader Akaysha Chavez said she hopes the cannon will return to East for her final year at the school, though the fun and excitement of the game is what really matters.

“I’m so excited, Cannon Week is stressful and it’s also the best week of the year,” Chavez said.

The Cannon Game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Dutch Clark Stadium.
