Police deputy receives life saver award for fire rescue

    2024-08-13

SPOKANE VALLEY - The Spokane Valley Fire Department presented police deputy, Trevor Ball with a Life Saver award at the commissioner's meeting Monday night.

Ball entered a burning home to bring two people to safety just over a month ago.

This all happened when he was on patrol, driving on I-90 and noticed a plume of smoke.

When he arrived on N. Bowman Rd., Ball saw flames on the porch and heard cries for help coming from inside. Body cam footage shows Ball entering the burning house and leading the two people inside to safety outside.

Ball said its unusual for a police deputy to arrive to a structure fire before the fire department, but this experience has given him a new mindset when he's out on patrol. He said he's always thinking of ways to improve.

"Hopefully there is not a next time, " said the deputy. "But that way if there is another one, I'm even...quicker to get inside the trailer or quicker to ask for additional resources or quicker to get people in adjoined trailers out."

Spokane Fire Chief Frank Soto Jr. presented the award to Ball.

"You can always rebuild homes," Soto said to Ball. "You cannot replace a life, and you saved two of them, sir."

Deputy Ball said that split decisions like these are all part of the job.

"It was just right place, right time. Any other deputy I know that I work with would have done the exact same thing," Ball said.
