NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Monsoon showers with rumbles of thunder are moving through across many areas of the region with even some wet snow showers in The San Juan Mountains. Precipitation is falling, including in Albuquerque, but also as far south as Hidalgo County, as far north as Durango, and nearly as far east as Santa Rosa. Some lightning strikes are firing off near Quemado and in The Four Corners where the atmosphere is more unstable as a few storms may become severe today while The Northeast Highlands of The Sangre de Cristo Mountains have a good possibility of flooding. With this precipitation, temperatures will generally be a little bit below normal in the northern areas, but because of drier air lingering to the southeast, slightly above-normal temperatures will ensue there. To start, temperatures are mostly in the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s, while some mountain areas are starting off in the 30’s, while some southwestern areas are starting off in the low 70’s.

As temperatures across the region rise from the morning school commute into the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and low 90’s by the afternoon, plenty of moisture in the air, along with just enough daytime heating, will lead to widespread thunderstorms across the northwestern two-thirds of the region. The San Juan Mountains, The Sangre de Cristo Mountains, The Western Mountains, and eventually The Northeastern Highlands, The Lincoln National Forest, as well as a good swath of The Rio Grande Valley, will most likely experience the northeasterly-moving batches of precipitation with burn-scar flash flooding likely at The HPCC. Within the areas that will rain, some hail, erratic wind gusts, frequent lightning strikes, and rapidly-dropping temperatures are possible.

A Great Basin high pressure system has dampened southwesterly upper-level winds across New Mexico, allowing for the moisture to stay in place for the next couple of days, while moving eastward. It won’t be until late Tuesday through Wednesday where conditions will significantly dry out for at least a couple of days with near-to-slightly above-normal high temperatures, but near-to-slightly below-normal low temperatures.
