ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s a firsthand look at what unfolded the day 26-year-old Jamil Lewis, who is suspected in a murder from June , was arrested for shoplifting at a Walmart in Albuquerque last month.

Lapel video from the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) shows how police chased him down in the big box store.

“Watch out. Watch out. Watch out! Hey, police department, let me see your hands! Don’t * ****** move!” an APD officer can be heard yelling on video.

On July 29, officers from APD responded to the Walmart on Wyoming Boulevard and Menaul Boulevard for a call about a shoplifter.

“Hey, stop running. I’m going to shoot you!” an APD officer yells while chasing a man, who was later identified as Lewis , through several aisles.

Lapel video shows Lewis suddenly on the ground: “Put your hands on your head! Don’t * ****** move! If you move, you’re going to get shot. You’re being detained; you’re not free to leave,” an APD officer can be heard telling Lewis.

Several officers try to put him in handcuffs, and the video shows that at first, Lewis tries to hold officers off. After a couple of minutes of struggling, police manage to place the handcuffs on him. Police began searching Lewis for merchandise and a gun that a security officer reported they saw.

“Hey, do you have a gun on you? Tell me the truth, right now. Tell me the truth,” an APD officer asks Lewis.

“No!” Lewis replies and asks why he’s being detained, and the police reply shoplifting.

    “Shoplifting,?” Lewis asks.

“Yeah, we have you on camera,” an APD officer replies.

According to the criminal complaint, police ended up retrieving $128 worth of goods from Lewis, including a holster he had slipped a gun into—that gun had fallen out during the chase, and a security guard later found it. Police claimed they also found a bag of fentanyl on him.

After getting Lewis up off the floor, they escorted him into the back of a waiting squad car, and an officer went to review footage Walmart had of Lewis shoplifting leading up to the call.

“He starts shoving merchandise, stuff, into his pockets. Then he’s gonna turn around, and then he’s going to come back up and shove more things in his shirt area,” a Walmart employee can be heard telling police.

From this incident, Lewis was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, concealing the weapon without a permit, resisting and evading officers, shoplifting, and possession of a controlled substance.

When police looked up Lewis in the system following this arrest, they found he was wanted in connection to a shooting of two brothers—Gerald and Edward Ibuado—that killed Gerald in June. Lewis is currently behind bars awaiting that trial.
