Husband arrested for wife’s slaying: Hayward police

( KRON ) — A woman’s suspicious death was recently deemed a homicide by the Hayward Police Department. The victim’s husband was arrested and booked into jail on murder charges on Monday, HPD said.

On Sept. 23, Hayward police said they received a call from a family member reporting “something happening inside their home” near the 27000 block of Eucalyptus Court.

Responding officers arrived at about 10:30 p.m. and found a woman, Tania Afnador, 47, unresponsive. HPD said Afnador was pronounced dead at the scene.

Afnador’s husband, Alvaro Sierra, 47, was also at the scene at the time of his wife’s death. HPD said Sierra was found suffering from “self-inflicted lacerations.”

HPD said he has since been treated at a local hospital and has been booked at the Santa Rita County Jail for murder.

Afnador and Sierra were legally married, but Hayward police said the two did not have any children in common.

HPD Chief Bryan Matthews commented the following statement:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Tania during this incredibly difficult time. The dedication of our entire department, from the detectives to supporting teams, was essential in solving this case… Domestic violence is a tragic and often unreported crime. We strongly encourage anyone in an abusive situation to reach out for help. We are here to provide protection and connect individuals with the resources and support they need.”

Hayward police said this investigation is ongoing and that anyone with information is asked to contact 510-293-7176. This is Hayward’s 12th homicide of the year, per HPD.
