Kitten rescued from Uber driver’s car in Menlo Park

(KRON) — A tiny black and white kitten was rescued from an Uber driver’s car by Menlo Park Fire District firefighters. The heartwarming rescue happened next to Woodside Bakery & Cafe in Menlo Park.

Uber driver Joel McKinnon said he was on a break and parked by the bakery when a woman dining outside spotted a kitten disappearing under his car. McKinnon was about to drive away when he noticed that the woman was frantically trying to get his attention.

“It’s a brand new electric car, and there was very little visibility of where it could have gone,” McKinnon said. First, the Uber driver turned up the volume of his radio and pounded on the exterior of his car, trying to spook the kitten out.

A crowd gathered around and someone in the crowd called the fire department.

“Three firemen started dissembling panels of the car under the hood and eventually were able to extricate it,” McKinnon said.

The kitten was OK. Photographs from the scene show the kitten looking up at its rescuers.

One the bakery’s employees immediately decided to adopt the lucky cat.

McKinnon said his experience was “one of those moments where one can find some faith in humanity. I’m very thankful to the lady who spotted it, and all who tried to help … especially the firemen who found a way to reach it.”
