Stars shine, role players step up: Vote for top performers of IHSAA basketball semistate

Shaun Arnold, Ben Davis: The senior had 10 points and sparked Ben Davis’ full-court press in a 66-38 win over Brownsburg in the Class 4A semistate championship at New Castle.

What we learned from semistate: Ben Davis didn't get to 32-0 on talent alone.

Flory Bidunga, Kokomo: The 6-10 junior went for 31 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocked shots in Kokomo’s 73-51 win over Fort Wayne Wayne in the first game of the Class 4A semistate and then had 25 points, 22 rebounds and five blocked shots in a 58-57 win over Penn to win the semistate.

Cade Brenner, NorthWood: The senior guard had 19 points in NorthWood’s 51-36 semistate championship win over Delta. He had 24 points earlier in the day in a 53-43 win over Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger.

Bryson Cardinal, Guerin Catholic: Cardinal, a sophomore, had 15 points and eight rebounds in Guerin Catholic’s 58-46 win over Beech Grove in the first game of the semistate at Seymour and then went for eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 56-40 win over Scottsburg to earn a bid in the Class 3A state championship.

Joey Hart, Linton-Stockton: The senior and Central Florida recruit had 29 points in Linton-Stockton’s 87-59 win over Parke Heritage in the early semistate game at Southport and added 23 points and eight rebounds in a 64-56 win over Brownstown Central to earn a trip to the Class 2A state finals.

Cayden Loescher, Lutheran: The sophomore had 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in Lutheran’s 55-47 win over Rock Creek Academy to win the Class A semistate at Washington. Loescher had 11 points in a 67-66 win over Loogootee in a comeback win earlier in the day.

Brayden Luce, Parke Heritage: Parke Heritage took an 87-59 loss to 2A top-ranked Linton-Stockton in the early Class 2A semistate game at Southport, but the sophomore Luce was a bright spot with 27 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the 3-point line.

Gage Sefton, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian: The senior had 29 points on 11-for-12 shooting from the field and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in a 75-58 win over Lewis Cass in the Class 3A semistate championship. Sefton had 15 points, six rebounds and six assists in a 88-82 win in the early game against Gary 21st Century.

Sheridan Sharp, Ben Davis: The senior guard scored a career-high 31 points in Ben Davis’ 78-55 win over Bloomington North in the first game of the Class 4A semistate at New Castle. Sharp had seven points in the night game, a 66-38 win over Brownsburg, to help put the Giants into the state finals.

Robert Sorensen, Guerin Catholic: The junior guard had eight points and six rebounds in Guerin Catholic’s 58-46 win over defending 3A champion Beech Grove in the first game of the semistate at Seymour, then exploded for 25 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the 3-point line and four rebounds in a 56-40 win over Scottsburg to earn a spot in the 3A state finals.

Logan Webb, Linton-Stockton: The senior went for a game-high 28 points and seven rebounds in Linton-Stockton’s 64-56 win over Brownstown Central in the Class 2A semistate championship at Southport. Webb had 24 points earlier in the day as the Miners rolled to an 87-59 win over Parke Heritage.

Ashton Williamson, Gary 21st Century: The senior guard had 29 points, nine rebounds and six assists in his final game as Gary 21st Century was edged by Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian 88-82 in the Class 2A semistate semifinal.

Cole Winer, Southwood: The senior had 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists in Southwood’s 64-56 win over Marquette Catholic to win the Class A semistate. Earlier in the day he had 21 points (10-for-10 shooting from the free-throw line) with three rebounds, three steals and two assists before fouling out in a 63-57 win over Fountain Central.
