Suicide rates in Sedgwick County decreased 13 percent between 2022 and 2023.

That data was provided to the Sedgwick County Commission by Dr. Nicole Klaus, Associate Professor at the KU School of Medicine. She said while 94 people died from suicide in 2023, the death rates are the lowest in the county since 2015.

Dr. Klaus says help is a just a phone call away, by calling 988 or the local suicide prevention line. The hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition to calling 988, you can call (316) 660-7500 or Text CONNECT to 741741.

Males made up three-fourths of suicide deaths. Firearms were the most common method of suicide, at 65 percent.

One of the biggest life stressors for people 34 and younger are relationship issues, while health challenges stress those 64 and older.
