Tomorrow is Memorial Day, a day honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. The Indianola American Legion is hosting a parade tomorrow beginning at 10am, starting at the Warren County Administration Building, then travel west on Boston Ave, south on N B St., east on Ashland across the square, south on Howard, then east on Salem, then south on 1st St across Highway 92, then east on 5th Ave to Highway 65/69, then south until the I.O.O.F Cemetery.

Washington State Bank has announced the opening of their lending office in Pella. A Grand Opening celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 31st, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at 703 Main St in Pella. The PACE Alliance will be joining the group at 4:00 PM for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Indianola Parks and Rec is hosting a program highlighting stories from Iowa’s veterans in their next installment of their Afternoon Adventures series this afternoon. Becky Lane with Indianola Parks and Rec tells KNIA News Sara Maniscalco Robinson, and Iowa National Guard Broadcast Journalist since 1997, will discuss the preserved stories of Iowa’s veterans, including accounts of the day Pearl Harbor was bombed, the morning the Twin Towers were attacked, and what it was like to be a woman in the military in WWII among many others. The Afternoon Adventure Speaker Series will be at 2pm at the Indianola Activity Center, and is free to the public. The program is funded by Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Let’s Talk Indianola – Warren County Fair

The Warren County Fair begins July 26th, featuring four nights of grandstand events that includes a pair of concerts. Fair Director Jo Reynolds tells KNIA News the grandstand events include Figure 8 Races, concerts by Easton Corbin and Sawyer Brown, a demolition derby, and grain truck races. Warren County Fair Grandstand Event Features Two Concerts

Funeral Services for Tom Holmberg, 86, of Oskaloosa, will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m., at Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with Military Honors by the Oskaloosa Honor Guard. Visitation will begin Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Langkamp Funeral Chapel and the family will greet visitors from 5-7 p.m. Langkamp Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

The Indianola High School Class of 2023 graduates today, with 250 seniors walking the stage to receive their diplomas. The graduation ceremony will be livestreamed for those unable to attend. The student speaker will be Logan Piper, with Madame Priebe being the keynote speaker. The ceremony will recognize honors students, in addition to those joining the military. Services for Joanne E. Housman, 94, will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 30th, at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be held following the services at the Liberty Center Cemetery.

The Indianola baseball team will try to continue a winning streak Monday as they host Warren County rival Carlisle. The Indians have faced a tough schedule so far this season, including matchups with class 4A powers Johnston and Southeast Polk in addition to local rivals Des Moines Roosevelt and Knoxville. The Indians have hit well as a team so far this season, batting .327 and getting on base at a .461 clip, while the Wildcats sit at 5-3 this season and have faced a similarly difficult schedule. The Memorial Day contest begins at 7:30pm at Indianola High School.

The Pella girls tennis team is in the final four of Class 1A today, seeking another upset against #1 Waterloo Columbus, while the top ranked Dutch boys tennis squad starts their quarterfinals journey in Iowa City Wednesday as the No. 1 seed against Ballard. In Des Moines, the #4 in 2A Pella girls soccer team is making their 14th ever state tournament appearance, starting against 5th seeded ADM Wednesday. That match can be heard on 92.1 KRLS, with pregame at 12:15 p.m.

Three Dutch Spring Teams at State This Week; Summer Sports at Gilbert Tonight

The Indianola High School softball team participated in the annual “Strike Out Cancer” game against rival Southeast Polk last week, a longstanding tradition to raise funds, awareness, and to support those around the programs who have been affected by cancer. Head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA News the annual game has honored many former players and coaches who have been affected by cancer, and presents an opportunity to come together as a community.

Pella Spring Sports Wrap Up Seasons at State This Week

The Pella Christian baseball and softball teams begin a busy week tonight by heading south to face Albia in non-conference action. The Eagles summer sports teams will each play single games today, Thursday, and Friday while playing in a doubleheader Wednesday and competing in a tournament Saturday. Following a 3-1 effort last week, the Pella Christian baseball squad squares off with a Blue Demons team that has struggled to a 1-6 start to the season. The Eagles fell to Grinnell to start last week, but grabbed wins over Moravia, Pleasantville and Des Moines Christian, while Albia lost all four of their games to Centerville, Clarke, and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

When the Knoxville Baseball Squad plays Ballard Wednesday night, it will be a battle of two ranked teams. The Panthers find themselves at #7 in the latest class 3A Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, right in front of the Panthers at #6 is Wednesday’s opponent, Ballard. Knoxville Coach Turner Devore knows how important this game will be in not only seeding purposes for the sub state, but for postseason awards as well.

Kerry Madsen did not find the runner first, but he finished 1st in the 410 A-Main Saturday at the Knoxville Raceway as heard live on KNIA. Madsen had to deal with Austin McCarl, Aaron Reutzel and Chase Randall before the track went rubber down the final ten laps and Madsen just had to hold his line for the win. Madsen told KNIA/KRLS Sports as Reutzel passed him about midway through the race, he noticed where he needed to run.

The Wildcats struck first with a run in the first, but Indianola answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 2-1 after the first. Both teams scored again in the second with the Indians leading 3-2, before a wild third inning included the Wildcats scoring four runs and the Indians scoring three to tie the game at six, and the offense continued in the fourth with the Indians adding two more to lead 8-6 after the fourth. The Wildcats earned another run back in the sixth, but the Indians held on to win the contest 8-7 to win their third straight game.
