The annual Thursdays in Pella events hosted by the PACE Alliance return to Central Park this evening. The first theme is “Jam with the Fam,” which is traditionally the lead off to the summer’s festivities. This evening’s festival starts at 6 p.m. and includes the annual bike rodeo, yard games hosted by several organizations and businesses, various food vendors, and entertainment by The Dans Co, Magician TJ Regul, and the Pella City Band concluding activities at 8 p.m. The KNIA/KRLS Lil’ Big Red Radio is broadcasting weekly from Thursdays in Pella this summer.

The Jefferson Highway Association is hosting a special event Monday, as the “Sociability Caravan” that travels through historic areas of the state will be traveling through Indianola. A special dedication of historic signage will take place in front of the former Hotel Warren at 113 E Salem, with Mayor Stephanie Erickson and Indianola Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger presenting.

Tonight is the annual Indianola Public Library Summer Bash, as the community is welcomed to the library parking lot to celebrate the return of warmer weather and the beginning of summer activities. Adult Services Librarian Jacy West tells KNIA News food trucks, ice cream, lawn games, face painting, and giant bouncy houses will be in the library parking lot, with air conditioning inside the library and activities such as board games and kids toys available. West said everyone is invited to come and celebrate with library and city staff. The Kick Off Summer event is from 6-8pm.

The Indianola Community Youth Foundation was awarded an $18,000 grant from Casey’s General Store that will be donated to the Indianola Middle School. ICYF Executive Director Taylor Nehring tells KNIA News she tries to keep her ear to the ground on what is needed in the schools or other organizations, and saw a need in the IM P.E. Department.

Each year, the City of Pella Public Works Department releases an annual water quality report. The purpose of the document is to review whether or not tap water met all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state drinking water health standards, which was the case again in 2022. The City of Pella obtains its water from the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer (Jordan Sandstone). Read more here.

Pleasantville City Deputy Clerk, April Schrader, tells KNIA/KRLS News, the big event has been in existence for over 10 years. The event includes a free will donation luncheon, kids activities, a bags tournament, a cooking contest, a band “Guilty by Association,” and an Afterparty.

Indianola Parks and Rec is hosting a program highlighting stories from Iowa’s veterans in their next installment of their Afternoon Adventures series this afternoon. Becky Lane with Indianola Parks and Rec tells KNIA News Sara Maniscalco Robinson, and Iowa National Guard Broadcast Journalist since 1997, will discuss the preserved stories of Iowa’s veterans, including accounts of the day Pearl Harbor was bombed, the morning the Twin Towers were attacked, and what it was like to be a woman in the military in WWII among many others. The Afternoon Adventure Speaker Series will be at 2pm at the Indianola Activity Center, and is free to the public. The program is funded by Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Indianola American Legion Post 165 hosted the annual Memorial Day Parade Monday, which included a service and dedication for the new Junior Edwards Statue at the IOOF Cemetery. Sergeant First Class Junior Edwards was an Indianola resident who was awarded a Medal of Honor for his actions during the Korean War, the only Iowa resident to do so. Joe Moody with the American Legion tells KNIA News he wants people to remember the meaning of Memorial Day, which is a day to honor the service members who lost their lives while in the service of their country. James Orville Morris, Jr., was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Third or Subsequent Offense; and Failure to Affix Drug Stamp, both felonies along with a charge of Operating While Under the Influence, 1st Offense, a serious misdemeanor.

The Twin Cedars Softball Squad started slow, but finished fast as the Sabers took down Seymour in a come-from-behind 4-3 decision in eight innings. Jillian French surrendered three runs in the top of the 1st inning, but settled down to shut down the Warriors the rest of the way, striking out 13. Meanwhile, the Sabers offense caught on as Rylee Dunkin, Kisha Reed, Kennedi Ford, and Kellie Stevenson had two hits each with Dunkin stealing three bases. It was Ford who got the game winner as she singled to right with French on 1st base. As the Seymour right fielder fumbled the ball, French was able to score the walk off run. The Sabers host Cardinal tonight.

The Pella girls tennis team is in the final four of Class 1A today, seeking another upset against #1 Waterloo Columbus, while the top ranked Dutch boys tennis squad starts their quarterfinals journey in Iowa City Wednesday as the No. 1 seed against Ballard. In Des Moines, the #4 in 2A Pella girls soccer team is making their 14th ever state tournament appearance, starting against 5th seeded ADM Wednesday.
