An interactive week of activities incorporating the history of Pella’s Dutch heritage returns to the Pella Historical Village this summer. Lisa Zylstra is bringing back the Dutch Day Camp for the 31st year on July 17th to 21st, a program that includes Dutch games, speaking and singing in the native language, crafts, and history lessons. The camp is open to incoming 5th and 6th graders and programming will be co-hosted by Jim Uitermarkt and Dr. Ronald Rietveld. Registration costs $80 for Pella Historical Society members and $100 for non-members, and includes a daily sack lunch. With new annual flowers planted and summer vacations beginning, Pella Historical Museums are ready for guests on busy weekends in south central Iowa. Assistant Director Jessi Vos says between their 2023 Feature Exhibit about local news and Pella’s history, to their many upcoming programs, they are excited to be a destination for those traveling to the Tulip City.

The Indianola Public Library held the annual Summer Bash event Thursday evening despite the rain canceling the outdoor portion, welcoming hundreds of community members to celebrate the return of summer with multiple activities inside the library including board games and signing up for the summer reading program. Library Director Michele Patrick tells KNIA News she encourages all kids to participate in the summer reading program.

The event will be held on Thursday, June 8 at 10 am in front of the new mural on the Brew Coffeehouse located at 626 Franklin Street as special guests Mayor Don DeWaard, Dutch Expert Milly Vande Kieft, and Muralist Hannah Heschke share a few remarks about the painting.

The first of two Indianola Chamber of Commerce Summer Nights Live concerts is Friday on the downtown Indianola square. The chamber changed the concerts to Summer Nights Live on the downtown Indianola square from Friday Night Live in Memorial Park, taking advantage of the finished construction on the Indianola downtown square. Parks and Rec Director Doug Bylund tells KNIA News a survey is available to the public right now, which will help determine the needs and wants of local parks.

The Indianola Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center will open for the season tomorrow, after scheduled maintenance and filling the pool is completed. The 2023 season will run until August 20th, with season passes still available for purchase, and the aquatic center opens Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1-7, Tuesday/Thursday from 1-6, and Saturday/Sunday from 1-5 for daily admission without a season pass, and those age 2 and under swim free with a paid adult admission. Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center Opens Tomorrow

A funeral service for Marjori Mae “Marge” Cox, age 93, of Bussey, will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Bussey, Iowa. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bussey. Memorials may be given in her memory to the First United Methodist Church of Bussey. Pierschbacher Funeral Home is assisting her family with arrangements.

The 2024 Presidential Campaign is in full swing ahead of the Iowa Caucuses early next year, and another candidate stopped in Pella this week. Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson was at Pella Cooperative Electric Friday. The Republican challenger discussed energy policy and focused criticism on President Joe Biden for his policies in energy, at the southern border, Afghanistan, and the federal budget.

The Knoxville Fire Department and several other local emergency crews responded to two incidents in Knoxville this evening. Fire Chief Cal Wyman says they were dispatched to a reported residential fire in the 100 block of South Conrey St at 8:16 p.m. The Knoxville City Fire Department responded with one engine company, one EMS company, and one command officers. Departments arrived to find smoke throughout the main floor of the residence. Engine crews made entry to find a dryer on fire. Crews extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure.

Several KNIA/KRLS area high school soccer players are earning postseason honors. Sisters Mia and Abby Warner were selected to the Class 2A All-Tournament team by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for their performances as part of the top four finish for the Pella girls soccer team. Three Norwalk players were named to the Class 3A All-Tournament Team in senior Jack Brown, junior Caden Endres and freshman Tyden Eng, after their 3A runner-up finish Saturday.

Area Soccer Athletes Earning Postseason Honors

It will be a little bit different this weekend at the Knoxville Raceway this week. The USAC National Sprint Cars will make an appearance tonight and tomorrow night for the Avanti Windows and Doors Corn Belt Clash. Kyle Cummins currently leads the USAC National Sprint Car points by 22 over four-time points champion Brady Bacon who has won four times in a USAC event at Knoxville, sweeping the weekend back in 2019. The weekly 360 and 410 sprint cars will also be in action this week with the 360s tonight and the 410s tomorrow night. You can listen to both nights starting with Live Track Side at 5:00 and Race Nights Live at 7:00 on the DeYarman Automotive Radio Racing Network on KNIA. Live Track Side tonight will air on both 94.3 and 95.3 KNIA, while Race Nights Live will only air on 95.3 due to local sports coverage.

The Indianola softball and baseball teams competed in separate tournaments Saturday, the softball squad at West Des Moines Valley and baseball at Martensdale-St. Mary’s. The #5 in 4A Indianola girls went 2-1 Saturday, falling to the hosting top-ranked in 5A Valley Tigers 12-0, and defeating #11 in 5A Des Moines Lincoln 4-3 and Boone 5-3. Kiley Kindelspire went 2-for-3 in both victories, racking up two triples in the process.

The Knoxville Baseball Squad embarks on another busy week as the class 3A #6 Panthers, still unbeaten at 12-0, head to Chariton for a conference game on Monday. Head coach Brent Matthias has announced the hiring of Callie Dutton as a full-time assistant coach for the Simpson College softball team. The program’s first full-time assistant coach in almost 25 years, Dutton is no stranger to the American Rivers Conference. She arrived to Dubuque as a sophomore in 2020 and earned the starting role at third base for the next three seasons, helping the Spartans win a share of the regular season conference title in 2022. Dutton hit .388 with three home runs and 25 RBIs that season while also receiving All-A-R-C Second Team honors.

Simpson College Softball Announces Full-Time Assistant Coach

The Indianola baseball and softball teams are back in action tonight for a single Little Hawkeye Conference game on the road at Pella. The Indians baseball team is looking for their first conference win after getting swept by Pella Christian in their opener on Wednesday, while the Indians softball team is flying high after scoring 32 runs in their opener against the Eagles. Head coach Stacy Evans said the Indians know that every conference win is crucial, and there are no easy games, so they will have to bring their “A” game and focus 100% on their opponent to get a win. Both games will be broadcast live, with softball on 92.1 KRLS beginning at 6:45, and baseball on 94.3 KNIA with pregame beginning at 7pm.

Pella Girls Soccer Loss Ends Successful Spring for Dutch

Whether it’s Groundhog Day or a case of deja vu, the Class 1A boys state team tennis finals has had the same end result for four consecutive seasons. And despite their best efforts to end the reign of the Saints, the Pella boys tennis team fell to Xavier in the state championship match Thursday 5-1 at the University of Iowa tennis courts in Coralville. The Dutch could not climb out of an early hole against the now four-time defending title winners, dropping the first set in five of the six matches on the court. Beau Bush earned the lone Dutch victory, and despite holding a lead in a pivotal set three, Jack Briggs ultimately fell in the No. 1 singles match, which gave the Saints their best of nine matches needed to claim the top trophy again. This is the fourth consecutive season Pella has placed 2nd in the Class 1A tournament.
